While I was thrilled that my workouts helped me lose some weight, I was pretty heartbroken that my favorite bike shorts from Girlfriend Collective are now way too big. My well-loved bike shorts were not only were a staple for summer workouts, but I often also wore these under skirts or dresses to prevent chafing. Once I’m not in-between sizes, I’m 100% investing in another pair (or two) of these shorts. Sizes: XXS – 6XLFabric: 79% recycled water bottles (RPET), 21% spandex Lane Bryant has long been a staple for plus-sized shoppers, and their activewear doesn’t disappoint. These LIVI leggings are some of my favorites because the high waist stays up and doesn’t roll down. Plus, the racing stripes are so fun and flattering that I get compliments every single time I wear them. The stripes also have a mesh panel that help me from getting overheated during more demanding workouts.Sizes: 10/12 – 38/40Fabric: 80% recycled polyester, 20% spandex I typically opt for sports bras that have a zipper because I get trapped in those that are too snug. But this one from Baleaf is a rare exception because easy to put on, and stretchy enough that it doesn’t feel constricting. While I wouldn’t recommend it for running, this is my go-to for daily walks and yoga workouts. It has a medium amount of support, and I wear a 40E bra, and the XL size fits my frame without feeling constricting. It holds up to regular wears and washes well, and hasn’t lost its stretch, even though it’s in frequent rotation. Sizes: XXS – XXLFabric: 69% polyester, 31% spandex I’ve already raved about these leggings that I wear for walking and yoga workouts, and they’ll earn a spot here as well. They are a thicker fabric, which means you can squat in them without worrying about showing off your underwear to the gym, but I still find them very breathable. I love that they don’t roll when I workout, they go up to a size 3X, and they’re super affordable. Sizes: XXS – 3XFabric: 87% nylon, 13% spandex If you are looking to invest in quality plus-size workout clothes, Athleta is the way to go. My Athleta zippered sweatshirt has been in my closet for 20 years—and while it’s well-worn, it still looks new. It’s a a similar (and older) version of this Seasoft quarter-zip, which is a perfect layer for people who like to do outdoor workouts even in the colder months. Sizes: XXS – 3XFabric: 49% polyester, 43% Tencel, 8% spandex When I want to run or do a HIIT workout, this is the sports bra I reach for. It has hooks and a zipper so I feel secure when I’m jumping around, and it’s got compression for days. It feels heavy duty and secure, and because you put it on like a jacket and then zip up, there’s no risk of getting trapped trying to pull it over your head. Sizes: 38C – 48DDDFabric: 79% nylon, 21% spandex In the spirit of complete honesty, it’s been a few years since I’ve had a pair of leggings from Universal Standard, only because of the cost. They are a bit pricier than I prefer. That being said, I loved the ones that I had so much and really appreciate Universal Standard’s commitment to not sacrificing quality for size inclusivity. These leggings come in two different length options, and with or without pockets, and the lightweight fabric is great for yoga or pilates classes. Sizes: 4XS – 4XLFabric: 81% nylon, 19% lycra During my running days, these shorts are my go-to. As my fellow plus-size girls know, chafing thighs can be a real issue, but these shorts have a inner snug lining that helps alleviate some of the issue (at least, more so than loose-fitting running shorts). The inner shorts even have a phone pocket, and the fabric is Nike’s signature moisture-wicking Dri-FIT fabric. Sizes: XXS – 4XFabric: 88% polyester, 12% spandex. As much as I complain that Old Navy doesn’t usually carry plus-sizes in store, I actually really like their athletic line, especially at this price point. I’ve owned versions of this CloudMotion Tank Top in nearly every size I’ve been because I like how effortlessly it fits. For yoga and the gym, I hate the feel of a tight sports bra and a tight top, and this one is comfortable enough to workout in and run errands after. Sizes: XS – 4XFabric: 47% recycled polyester, 46% polyester, 7% spandex Shopping for plus-size workout gear has a lot of challenges, because most retailers (unless that’s their entire brand, like Lane Bryant) don’t carry the extended sizes in stores. So, you have to order things online, try them on, and hope for the best. Here’s how to shop smart: Be aware that sizing in the plus-size realm is wildly inconsistent. Brand depending and product depending, it can vary. Also, XXL and 2X are not the same thing, and a size 3X might fit at one store, but not another. Know your measurements and and look at the size guide for each item. Many retailers use small models for their clothing, so it’s really hard to guess how things will fit your body just by looking. Look for fabric that contains a high percentage of elastane or spandex. Fabric for athletic wear is super important, especially when it comes to plus sizes. Ultimately, the more stretch in a fabric, the better chance it has of fitting. Also, look for items that are breathable or moisture-wicking (nylon is your friend), especially if you, like me, get sweaty while working out. Don’t underestimate the importance of reviews. It’s always good to see what other shoppers’ experiences are to ensure an item will fit or isn’t see through (a particular issue with many poorer quality leggings!). Even when I was marathon training and doing HIIT workouts a decade ago, I have always been mid-sized or plus-sized. These days I’m primarily testing my workout gear doing yoga, walking, hiking, and a bit of running, but most of these picks should stand up to heavier workouts as well. To meet my personal standards for making this list, gear had to be comfortable, be made of high-quality fabric, and most importantly, be size-inclusive. I’ve mostly included items from brands that I’ve personally tried and love.
